Lots of things can damage your hearing, such as illnesses, infections, headphones, and loud noises. Many people who have worked in construction, the music industry, or the army suffer from damaged hearing, despite precautions. But everyone can do more to protect their hearing, especially children who are more vulnerable to permanent damage.
Use earplugs around loud noises
Although many earplugs have been found to be inadequate against very loud noises, they are still better than wearing nothing. Furthermore, for most things such as concerts or lawnmowers, most standard earplugs will do.

Turn down the volume
According to the World Health Organization, 1.1 billion young adults and teenagers are at risk of hearing loss because of the “unsafe use of personal audio devices.” Many of us listen to audio via headphones at high volume for long periods of time.
A good suggestion is to listen at 60% volume for 60 minutes a day or less. Furthermore, earbuds can be particularly damaging as they sit right next to the eardrum. Over-ear headphones are the best, and they often sound better. Moreover, you can buy over-ear headphones with noise cancellation, which results in better sound quality so you can have the volume lower and still hear well.
Your ears need time to rest and recover after lots of loud noise. If you are at a bar or concert, go outside every now and again.
Research suggests that after a day or night of lots of loud noise, you should rest your ears for around 16 hours.
No more cotton swabs
Do not use cotton swabs to clean the wax in your ears. Wax in your ears is essential, it stops dirt from entering your ears which can cause infection. Furthermore, inserting things into your ears can be damaging.
If you do have excess wax, try a warm damp towel or a wax removal solution. If you still have concerns, then speak to your doctor.
Keep them dry
Moisture aids the growth of bacteria, which can then cause infections. Towel dry your ears after washing or swimming, and if you can still feel the water in your ear, tilt your head and tug on your ear lobe.
If you swim a lot, then you could also consider investing in a swimmer’s earplugs.
Exercise is good for so many things, including your ears. Cardio exercise like running, walking, or cycling gets your blood pumping all over your body, including your ears. This helps them to stay healthy.
If you do have any concerns, then speak to a doctor. It is better to spot things early so that any damage can be minimized. Hearing loss usually develops gradually, so as you get older, you should have a yearly check-up.
