Kids are precious, and they are the reason we have so much fun and laughter in our lives. But travelling with kids, especially toddlers, can be not so blissful and nice as we think.

Of course, we, as parents, want to show our kids all the beauty and diversity of the world, and visiting such significant places as Rome is a great opportunity to widen your child’s perspective on the world.

But it will not be easy, and without proper preparation and travel tips, the trip can turn out to be a disaster. So, today we gather a couple of simple but useful tips that will help you to prepare for a journey with toddlers and make it fun for both you and your kids. Without further ado, let’s learn how you can go to Rome with your kids and have fun with them there.

Packing list

Any travel preparation process starts with creating a packing list for vacation. As adults, we can go all over the globe with only one backpack with a toothbrush in it, but kids have completely different needs.

Our short-list of must-haves when you with kids on the road consists of:

  1. Diapers, sanitisers, napkins, and other toiletries for kids
  2. Healthy snacks to survive a trip before you can get into a local restaurant: kids can become starving in the most unpredictable moment!
  3. Colouring books
  4. Tablet or a smartphone with apps for toddlers
  5. Earphones: only your kid should listen to Elmo on the plane, not everybody
  6. Road games

Best time to travel to Rome with kids

The general rule here is that you should go to any city only when there are enough activities to do with toddlers there. But it is not the only factor we need to consider here. Weather is a deciding factor for us, and spring and fall are perfect for visiting Rome with kids.

Spring is a little bit rainier than fall, but in general, these seasons offer warm and nice weather without any extremely hot days. In summer and winter, you will get conditions too extreme for a little child, so we do not recommend you to go to Rome during those months.

Where can you go with the kids in Rome?

Rome has an abundance of unique places to visit, but, unfortunately, not all of them are completely child-friendly. Sometimes we even advise you to start with a more family-friendly Vatican before exploring Rome, but if you have limited time on your hand, here are our top three places to go with kids in the capital of the ancient Roman Empire.

  1. The Colosseum. You just must visit the Colosseum because this place is breathtaking even for kids. Children would love to hear stories about battles and gladiators in the Colosseum, and just walking and exploring it will be very fun!
  2. Villa Borghese Gardens. What can be better for kids than a beautiful green park just around the corner of a city centre? Villa Borghese Gardens is a magnificent park where you can rent a family bike to explore the place, visit a cute playground, and take kids to a local zoo! Do we need any more arguments to assure you that your child will love it?
  3. Piazza Navona. Famous Piazza Navona has a fantastic Fountain of the Four Rivers, cute cafes, and many pigeons for kids to chase. It is one of Rome’s most beautiful architectural gems, and we assure you that you all will have fun at Piazza Navona.

And when your little ones are now tired of all the sites, monuments, and ancient ruins, give them a break and visit one of the best beaches in the world: Italian ones.

Activities for kids

As for activities for children, we usually recommend having both stuff for active and passive games for kids. Yes, some children can spend the whole day streaming cartoons, but even the laziest child eventually will get up and want to do something else.

We advise you to grab Twister, jump ropes, and other things that can be both fun and active. Maybe your kid will be absolutely exhausted after the whole day walking in the city, but kids have endless energy reservoirs, and their abilities may surprise you.

More fun for your lovely children

Do you not want to stuff your kid’s brain with cartoons and apps, or do you wish to find alternative fun things to do with toddlers? Want? Then this part is for you!

The internet is not always available everywhere you go, and you can find yourself in a position when your kids are yelling, and you just can’t offer them anything fun to do! So, it is better to be prepared and create content beforehand to have something to show your children on travel.

We advise you to create an educational but fun video presentation about Rome and all the sites you will visit with kids, with fun facts and interesting details. Make this presentation on your PC, record it with screen recorder for Windows or Mac, add your voiceover and boom! You have amazing entertainment for your children on the road!

Believe us, kids will be so enchanted by your awesome videos, so you will be able to visit all the cute Rome cafes and have a great time there just like before kids!

Conclusion

Do you now feel more confident about your family travelling with kids? We bet you can’t wait to visit one of the grandest cities in the world and show your toddlers all the treasures of ancient Rome.

Of course, we get that trips with kids are not all fun and play, but we assure you if you use our tips, this adventure will be the best family vacation you have ever had. Stay creative, and you will have the time of your life on this family trip to Rome!
