Aside from adding illumination, lighting has a huge influence on your mood and can be used to optimise your productivity. Poor lighting on the other hand can lead to a plethora of issues such as reduced motivation, neck, back and muscle strain, strain on the eyes and resultant headaches. If you’re in the process of setting up a home office or are looking to change your existing lights, here are a few things to consider.
Make Use of Daylight
The best form of light is daylight. It can lift your mood, is a great way to get in vitamin D and of course is free. However, not all rooms are blessed with heaps of daylight. The room you’re working with may be north facing and lack sunlight, have small windows, or not have any at all.
Non-Glaring Light
While you need light, being in direct contact with it isn’t particularly good either. It can cause headaches, dry eyes and simply be an annoyance when you’re trying to concentrate. So instead, when you introduce lighting, do so strategically and avoid placing your screen where it catches it.
Overhead Lighting and Lamps
Your typical ceiling light or ambient light produces a nice base layer and does a good job at evenly distributing it. Alongside that you may choose to have additional lamps dotted around, at your desk for example for increased visibility where it’s needed. Surprisingly you can still have issues with visibility due to poor placement. Having inconsistency creates shadows and makes it hard for you to see clearly if you’re trying to read. Style wise, you will be able to find a good variation to fit your office aesthetic. For a minimalist, industrial feel we recommend the range by Brokis who supply sophisticated designs and quality hand blown glass.
Add Layers
Like our suggestion above, you can layer lights as you wish. You may choose to add wall or floor lamps to a quiet corner with bean bags or an armchair that you have, or spotlights around shelves and bookcases. This is what we call “accent lighting”. It’s used to highlight key architectural elements and anything else that you want to give attention to, like awards. There are so many different options and what each will allow you to do is create dimension. You will be able to transform a room that is very cold and square into something completely unrecognisable.
