How the Right Kids Clothing Can Get Teenagers Outdoors More (Without the Battle)
#Collaborative post
If you’ve got teenagers like I do, you’ll know that getting them outside can sometimes feel like a full-time job.
One minute they’re bored, the next they “don’t want to go out”, and before you know it, they’re back on their phones again. And while I’m all for downtime (we all need it), I also want them getting fresh air, moving a bit and actually enjoying being outdoors.
Over time, I’ve realised something quite simple…
What they wear makes a huge difference not only in their comfort but also in their individual teen style.
Why Style Matters More Than We Think for Teens
When they were younger, I could pretty much pick anything, and they’d wear it. There was never any pushback, and in fact, I would say they loved my picks back then (they may not have agreed!)
Now though? Absolutely not.
Teenagers want:
- Clothes that reflect their individual style
- Outfits that feel current and on trend
- Pieces they’re comfortable being seen in
And if something feels “uncool”? It won’t even make it out of the wardrobe so there is absolutely no point in even purchasing it.
That’s why finding that balance between practical and stylish is so important—especially when it comes to outdoor clothing.

The Role of Kids Trainers in Everyday Outdoor Life
Let’s start with the one thing that seems to matter most in our house… trainers.
A good pair of kids trainers isn’t just about ticking a fashion box (although that definitely helps). They also need to handle real life, which for teens includes:
- Walking to and from school
- Last-minute plans with friends
- Hanging around parks or taking a last-minute shopping trip
- General day-to-day wear
What I’ve found works best is choosing trainers that combine comfort, durability and style, so they don’t feel like they’re “just for certain occasions”. Of course, they do have that pair that they tend to wear more for occasions such as meals out or family get-togethers but they have others that they wear all the time.
Because if they love wearing them, they’ll naturally end up wearing them more—and heading out more too.
Why a Kids Tracksuit Is a Teen Staple
If I had to describe my teens’ wardrobe in one word, it would be… tracksuits. If you are of the same era as me, you will remember well living in the 3-strip joggers with the poppers down the side. They were all the rage, and we wore them for everything!
A good kids tracksuit has become their go-to for pretty much everything:
- Lounging at home
- Quick trips out
- Meeting friends
- Even casual days at school
And I think we all get it, not only are they comfortable to wear and easy to throw on, they are back on trend now and are everyone’s go-to.
What I love as a parent is how versatile they are. A full set works as an outfit, but each piece can also be mixed and matched—so you get more wear out of them without constantly buying new clothes.

Making Outdoor Time Easier (Without Forcing It)
I’ve definitely been guilty of saying:
“Go outside, it’s nice out!”
…and being met with that look.
But the reality is, teens are much more likely to head out if it feels easy and natural—not something they’re being pushed into. How many times have you dragged them out to get some fresh air, yet their friends call, and they are out of the house before you even get a chance to find out what their plans are.
And clothing plays a bigger role than we probably realise.
When they have outfits that:
- Feel good to wear
- Looks like something their friends would wear
- Work for whatever the day brings
No outfit change needed. No overthinking. Just out the door and off to have some fun.
Choosing Clothes That Actually Last
Let’s be honest—teenagers are not always gentle on their clothes. I have lost count of the times a pair of trousers has a hole in the knee or the pocket has come away from the seam.
So alongside style, durability really matters too.
The pieces that work best for us are the ones that can:
- Handle regular washing
- Keep their shape
- Still looks good after multiple wears
That’s why I tend to lean towards well-known sportswear brands for everyday basics—they’re designed for movement, which makes them perfect for busy teen life.
My Honest Mum Take
I’ve learned over the years that you can’t force teenagers to spend more time outdoors.
But you can make it easier.
And sometimes, it starts with something as simple as what they are wearing.
If they feel comfortable, confident and like themselves in what they’re wearing, everything else becomes that little bit easier—from saying yes to going out, to actually enjoying it once they’re there.
And honestly? That’s a win for everyone.
