Do You Gain Weight Back After Wegovy? What the Data Says

For people trying to lose weight, Wegovy is sometimes considered. But while it’s effective in aiding in weight management, what happens when people stop taking it?

The potential for weight gain after Wegovy is a concern for many patients, and regain is something that can happen when people stop. There’s no guarantee you’ll undo your progress if you end your treatment, however.

Here, we’ll look at why weight gain after Wegovy can occur, what the data says and what people can do to try to prevent it from happening.

How Wegovy helps aid weight loss

Wegovy is a GLP-1 medication. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. This means that it mimics the hormone GLP-1, which is produced in the gut and sends messages to the brain, telling it that the stomach is full.

It slows digestion, reduces appetite and makes people feel fuller for longer. It reduces food noise, persistent thoughts about food and eating that can make weight management more difficult, too. So, people on Wegovy tend to eat less food. This helps them gradually lose weight over time.

Wegovy isn’t magic, and it doesn’t work on its own. It’s most effective when people use it while making changes to their lifestyle, such as eating a balanced diet or exercising more regularly. Weight loss still depends on a calorie deficit, burning more calories than you consume, but Wegovy can help you achieve it.

What the data says about weight regain

Research from the University of Cambridge in 2026 offers a valuable insight into weight regain on Wegovy and how Wegovy results might change after stopping treatment.

In many cases, stopping Wegovy results in weight regain. Researchers found that patients regained an average of 60% of lost weight a year after they stopped taking Wegovy and Ozempic, which also contains semaglutide.

However, rebound weight often plateaued at this point, with patients keeping off about 25% of the weight they lost while on medication.

More research published in 2026, from the University of Oxford, found that weight increased by an average of 0.4 kilograms per month after medications, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, were stopped.

Researchers also found that weight regain after stopping medications was faster than regain after ending behavioural programs that focus on aspects of health like diet and exercise support.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in England assumes that people will gradually regain weight after they stop taking GLP-1 medications, and will return to around their original weight by three years. However, the study’s findings suggest that weight could be regained more quickly than current modelling assumes.

More research is needed, particularly concerning weight regain on Wegovy specifically, to find out how fast people regain weight on average.

Why weight regain can happen

Wegovy suppresses appetite and makes people feel fuller after eating less food. Without Wegovy or other GLP-1 medications, appetite can return, meaning that people start eating more food and consuming more calories.

Changes in metabolism can play a part, too. After losing weight, the body can become more efficient in how it uses energy, burning fewer calories. As a result, maintaining weight loss can be more difficult.

For these reasons, Wegovy is most effective when it’s used alongside lifestyle changes. While there are no guarantees, someone who adopts healthier eating habits and exercises regularly while using Wegovy may find it easier to prevent weight regain after they stop.

Stopping treatment suddenly can have an impact, too, making it more difficult for the body and the mind to adjust to the new change. With a gradual transition away from medication, people can adapt more easily.

How long should people take Wegovy for?

Obesity is a chronic health condition, and Wegovy is often used as a long-term treatment for weight management.

There’s no universal recommended duration that applies to everyone, and some people may decide to stop treatment if they feel like they’ve reached a weight target or they’re finding the Wegovy side effects difficult to manage.

But continued usage is likely to help people maintain their weight loss more effectively, whereas stopping can sometimes lead to potential weight regain.

If you have any questions about your treatment, or you’d like to stop or switch to a lower dose, you can speak to your prescriber. They may be able to offer some advice to maximise your weight-loss outcomes and support your treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone regain weight after stopping Wegovy?

We’re all different, and not everyone will necessarily regain weight after stopping Wegovy. Some people will regain more than others, too, depending on factors like their metabolism and their lifestyle.

Does weight gain happen straight away after stopping?

Weight gain tends to be more gradual, and can happen over several months as appetite slowly returns. But some people may have different experiences and find that they regain more weight sooner.

Can I prevent weight gain after stopping Wegovy?

There are ways to help reduce the likelihood of gaining weight. By transitioning off Wegovy gradually and incorporating more healthy lifestyle changes, you may be able to improve your long-term outcomes.
