Today we are sharing one of our new favourite recipes, baked doughnuts! There is something about the smell of fresh doughnuts cooking, you know the ones at fairs and events that you can smell from miles away. However, how do you recreate that back at home with minimal fuss?
Now traditionally doughnuts are deep-fried, this slightly healthier option sees you bake your doughnuts in a machine that cooks them evenly on both sides.
We have been trying out the VonShef 3 in 1 Snack Maker by Domu (available on Amazon currently) to recreate our own doughnuts. This machine however does more than just bake doughnuts, it also allows you to make waffles and brownies, whilst in the comfort of your own home. It is a compact machine that comes with 3 sets of plates so you can interchange them depending on what you are in the mood for.
One thing I love though is how easy these are to make, once you have your mixture, you simply pop it on to warm up and the little light on the top comes on when it is ready to use. Then you just pop in the mixture and close the lid and let the magic happen! In less than 10 minutes they are ready for you to enjoy.
This video here gives you a great overview of the product and just how to use it.
For £44.99 it is one of my favourite gadgets in the kitchen at the minute, I don’t think there is anything better than warm desserts after a long day. We’ve been trying out recipes in doughnut tray for a few weeks now and these are amazing I won’t lie. Can you beat fresh doughnuts dipped in nutty chocolate?
This recipe will give you about 21 doughnuts from the machine so you won’t be left out trust me. Personally, I prefer these doughnuts when they are fresh out of the machine, however, they do keep well for up to two days in an airtight container, should they last that long!
This is the perfect doughnut recipe for a doughnut maker however if you have no space for a doughnut maker, you can recreate these in the oven using this tray. Simply follow the recipe and then pop them in the oven, gas mark 6 until they are golden.

Suggested doughnut toppings:
- Chocolate spread – We used the delicious Jimjams on ours, with 83% less sugar than most other spreads you can have a treat without feeling too bad. Any chocolate spread you use will work well on this though, so just grab what you have in your cupboard.
- Icing sugar – A sprinkling of icing sugar whilst the doughnuts are still warm will give you that sweet kick.
- Icing with sprinkles – Want to push the boat out, why not enjoy these baked doughnuts with a topping of icing and sprinkles. It will be a complete overload of sugar, but why not?
- Jam – If you don’t fancy chocolate or icing, how about some of your favourite jam? Whilst still warm, gently dip your doughnuts in your favourite flavoured jam.
Which flour is best for doughnuts?
Here in the UK, we use strong bread flour for a lot of the recipes but for this one plain flour works absolutely fine. As long as you are not using self-raising flour, you will find this recipe will work really well.
How long do doughnuts last?
These doughnuts will last for 3-4 days in an airtight container, after that they will go past their best. We use these tins to keep all our bakes in and they are big enough for storage and keep the items air-tight (when the kids stop opening it for food!)
Just remember though if you are using toppings, you will need to take into consideration how long those toppings stay fresh and ensure you are storing them correctly once they are added to your doughnuts.
It really is as simple as that. This machine is there to take the work from you whilst you enjoy the rewards at the end. Once they are cooking, you are free to take a few minutes out whilst you wait.
