When it comes to raising children, there are many things parents try and incorporate to ensure their child is raised with the best morals and values around. Respect is one of the biggest things a parent can teach their child as it is a trait every person should acquire to the best degree possible. Children at a young age are not exactly the best examples for respectful behaviour as they are still experiencing change and are always testing the limits. Despite this, it is important parents do their very best to incorporate habits and practices into their child’s daily life in order to make them respectful. Here is some advice from a private nursery in Hertfordshire on how to do that.
Demonstrate the respectful behaviour yourself. The respect we usually expect from our children, we don’t give it back. And that plays a huge role in how children behave towards us and others around them. Begin by listening and showing your child that you are engaged with their topic of conversation. Keep eye contact and give them your full attention. Instantly, they will understand that you care and respect what they would like to share with you.
Teach them how to respond politely. Youngsters can show care and manners through the way they communicate with others. By a young age, they should be consistently using their please and thank you’s to all around them. Explain to your child how happy and proud you are when you see them being kind to others and showing respect. Eventually, this should become a regular part of their vocabulary.
Avoid overreacting when you can. Try and not get too upset when your child says or does something that you are no happy with. Children rarely respond well when they are punished or shouted at and tend to do the opposite of good. In a quiet but firm voice, tell them what it is they did wrong and why they should not have done it. Give them choices of ways they can communicate with you when they feel like that in the future to avoid falling into these situations again.
Set limits. A respectful child is one that understands boundaries. Children stay away from trouble when they learn to respect their parents and the rules they have set in place. Explain to your child why you have set the rules and go from there. Once your child learns to abide by the rules set for them, they will be well on their way to becoming a respectful child.
