One of the most challenging things about our home is the lack of storage space. It has taken a while for us to get used to, but now we have a number of storage hacks for making the most of the space we have.
Most of the storage that we have in and around our home, is simple and quick solutions which utilise the space that we have as much as possible and don’t cost a fortune. Although it has taken us a while to get to where we are, I think we are now at the point where we have enough storage for what we need.
If you are struggling with space in your home, here are our top tips for making the most of your space.
Think outside the box –
Don’t just think of your traditional storage spaces!
We have a shed that we use for storing drinks and cleaning products etc just outside the door. It is racked out with shelving units and just holds the bits that we don’t need every day. It also has the added bonus that in the winter it becomes a fridge for our drinks too!
In an ideal world, we would rather these be stored in the house, but this was a quick solution to our lack of storage in our home.
Under the bed storage –
One of the best things we brought for our bedroom is an ottoman bed.
Although it can be a little on the heavy side to lift with the mattress on top, it is the perfect place to store those things that you don’t need to use on a regular basis but do not want to put away in the loft or somewhere else for long term storage. I use our one for storing things such as extra bedding and blankets for the winter or it is a great place to hide Christmas presents!
Use small boxes and trays –
This may seem like a strange one but we all have shelves, cupboards and draws where we stick odds and sods and before you know it they are taking up the whole space.
Invest in some small storage boxes or trays for these areas and get them organised, you will find this will be a double benefit, not only for the space being used better but also you will find that you are not buying things that you already have but can never find!
Be clever with the space you do have –
If like us you have limited space around the home, make the most of the space you do have. So if you are short on space in the kitchen for example, hang your utensils rather than using a post and pop little hooks inside your cupboards to hang your cleaning cloths and other bits and pieces.
There are now lots of products on the market that you can use to enhance the space too. Many of us have shelves in the kitchen that are maybe a little too big for what is on them, now you can get shelf raisers or even hanging shelves that just help to use the space a little better.
Sorting out your storage doesn’t need to be just in the home, getting your car or work van for example is also a great way to make life a little easier, things such as van racking and car boot storage are becoming more and more popular as many of us are on the move a lot!
Having a small home can be tricky when it comes to getting the best storage but with just a few minor adjustments, there are plenty of ways to make the space work better for you and your family.
