Tips for adding lighting to your kitchen

#Collaborative post

Your kitchen is one room in your home where it’s really important to have good lighting. After all, you probably spend a lot of time in there preparing your food and making your morning coffee. Families with larger kitchens probably even eat in there at the dining table, while those with open-plan kitchens and living spaces probably use this area as the main hub of their home. However, getting the lighting right in your kitchen is easier said than done. Here are some tips to help you get it right.

Use LED bulbs

Changing light bulbs in the kitchen can be a bit of a hassle, especially if you have high ceilings and lots of little spotlights. While it’s inevitable that you’ll have to change your bulbs at some point, LEDs typically last a lot longer than traditional bulbs, which will not only save you money, but time as well.

Buy multi-purpose lights

If you use your kitchen for all kinds of purposes, from cooking a Sunday roast to baking with the kids and doing crafts at the table, you probably want lights that do more than one thing. Instead of installing bulbs that are only one colour and have one brightness setting, consider investing in LED colour changing light strips. These can be used to light up workspaces with bright white light or create an atmosphere in the evenings before bed with a warm yellow or cool blue glow. They can even double as Christmas lights, helping you to add some seasonal fun to your home décor.

Colour changing lights are especially useful if your children are reluctant to sit at the table and eat with you. Try to entice the little ones to have dinner as a family by letting them choose what colour the lights will be that evening.

Install lights on furniture

The best way to light up your kitchen space is to install spotlights or strip lights on kitchen units themselves. This way, you’ll be able to easily light up your counters when you’re doing things like chopping. You may also want to install light bars across shelves or in drawers and cupboards. These can be configured to turn on when you open your storage unit, helping you to find exactly what you’re looking for in the back of your pantry.

Use remote controls

Things can easily get messy in the kitchen and the last thing you want is to be fumbling behind a cabinet for the right light switch. Most kitchen lighting systems can be controlled from a central remote, allowing you to easily adjust how much lighting you need for the task you’re currently working on.

Every kitchen is different, so your lighting needs may be very different from those of your friends. Use the tips in this blog that make the most sense to you and try and find some creative solutions for other problems you might be facing. With a little bit of thought, you’ll soon have a well-lit kitchen that meets all your family’s needs.
