A home office is now one of the top requirements when it comes to people moving home, whether it be in a converted garage or loft or just a spare room in the house. Since the pandemic, many of us have more of a hybrid approach when it comes to working.
No matter where the space may be, making the area work best for you is the only way you will be productive. There are a number of things that make a good working environment and this includes good light, ventilation and heat. Let’s face it, you are nowhere near as productive when you are in a cold dark room compared to a light ventilated space, which is why I find working in the summer mornings so much easier.
If you currently do not have a space to work and are looking to create that perfect home office or maybe are looking to revamp your home office, you don’t need to spend a fortune to create the perfect space. Here are our top DIY tips to help you with your home office without blowing the budget on the professionals.
- Consider window shutters – When it comes to our windows many of us think of blinds or curtains however wooden shutters offer a better solution and look great too. They give you the option for managing the light coming in without blocking it out completely, which make them the perfect privacy option too but they are also energy efficient too keeping the room warm and cosy. You may be thinking that this is an expensive option but that is not always the case, you can get the luxury style at the fraction of the cost with DIY shutters, they can be 40% cheaper than other alternatives if you are happy to install them yourselves.
- Lighting is key – As well as natural light. ensuring your room has the perfect lighting all day is a must. It will vary from room to room depending on the space and natural light but there is now a huge range of lighting options for your home from desk lamps, floor lamp and LED lighting to pick from. Once you are almost done with any renovations, making sure you are able to work comfortably all day is essential. Those who are self-employed will know that a working day is not a 9-5 job, there could be early mornings and late nights and ensuring the lighting works for you is essential.
- Storage – It doesn’t need to cost you a fortune to kit out an office, it may just be a case of working away from the norm to get the space you need. We have a desk in our living room that is built from a worktop and kitchen cabinets, looking at it you wouldn’t see it as a kitchen because of the way it is built but one of the key things is we have loads of storage! If you are on a tight budget, Ikea has a great range of storage that doesn’t need to blow the budget and is easy to install.
Creating a calm space that gives your light and ventilation is key to making your home office a success. The space doesn’t need to be the biggest or the brightest but making the most of it is what makes it work. I always find when I am able to get some peace in the summer months when it is warm without the need for the heating and the sun rises early, it makes it feel as though I have more hours in the day and that is exactly the same for the home office. Ensuring you have the right environment is key for a productive room.
