Wise Words Wednesday with Fiona

Good morning and welcome back to our latest edition of Wise Words Wednesday. Today we have the lovely Fiona from Savvy In Somerset taking to the seat.

Fiona’s blog is packed full of ways to save money and make money. It has been very inspiring to me as this year I plan to take stock of our finances and knuckle down. She is also genuinely a lovely person and has been very supportive of my new blog Savvy Squirrel.

Tell us a little bit about you & your blog:

I’m Fiona and I blog at www.savvyinsomerset.com I blog mostly about saving money but also cover making money, recipes and days out too. I live in Somerset and I love getting out and about and exploring the county, there is so much to do here!

What inspired you to start blogging?

Starting a blog was something I had wanted to do for a long time but had always been scared to do. I studied English and have always loved writing but I somehow ended up becoming a chef as my main career. After years of being super frugal to save up £50k to buy our first house I decided to combine the two and start a money saving blog.

What has been your highlight of blogging?

I recently had an email from one of my favourite bloggers saying she’d linked to a blog post of mine in one of hers because she thought it was ‘Genius’, that certainly made my day! It’s also so nice to connect with a community of likeminded people, who love saving money and helping others as much as I do.

Is there anything you have learnt about blogging which you wish you knew when you started out?

How much hard work it is! It’s so easy to think it’s just the writing but it is so much more than that. I do feel like it’s taken over my life a bit and that can be hard when I’m also working full time. Hopefully it will be worth it in the long run!

Bloggers sometimes get a lot of stick however many work really hard and are reaping the rewards, what has been the most rewarding part of blogging for you?

I think a lot of people that have never tried blogging themselves think it’s easy or not a proper a job and honestly that couldn’t be further from the truth. Bloggers that are making money do work really hard for it.

One of the most rewarding parts is getting messages from people that have found my blog and saved money because of it. Whether it’s getting free food from an app or applying to be in magazine to make some extra cash I love that I’ve been able to help people.

What would be your 1 tip you would give all new bloggers starting out?

Don’t give up! It can be such hard going at times, especially in the very beginning but it’ll be worth it in the end. Consistency is key, push yourself even when you feel like it’s not working. Remember to celebrate the little achievements as well as the big. I like to write things down so I can see how far I’ve come.

Who do you find inspiring to read/watch in the blogging world?

I love Emma Drew, I’d been following for blog for years before I joined her money making course and started my own blog.

From Pennies To pounds – Francesca is always to lovely to speak to and is killing it with her blog, she has so many fantastic ideas for making money.

MrsMummyPenny and I have a shared love of Las Vegas – I also love her honesty which comes through in many of her posts.

Lastly – do you have any big plans/dreams for your blog in the next 12 months?

I do eventually hope to start making money from my blog – we plan to start a family sometime in the next year and I know it’s unlikely I’ll be able to go back my day job as the hours are so unsociable. Being able to work from home and fit blogging in around family life is the dream!

Thank you Fiona for taking the time to be part of the Wise Words Wednesday this week 🙂
