It is a well-known phrase “too nice for your own good”, but does this stop you from getting the best deals in life? From salaries to home products to new cars, we Brits tend to be a bit too polite for our own good and just accept the answers that we are given.
However, is it really getting us the best deals in the long run? It is not rude or overconfident to try and get the best deal for you in life. After all, what would annoy you more, finding out you are paying more than everyone else as you were too polite to ask for a better deal?
If you are unsure on the best way to be assertive, there is this assertiveness course which you are able to learn how to stand up and be confident in your answer and saying no. Being assertive though is not all about saying no, it is about getting an outcome that is right for you.
For example, recently our TV service provider recently got in touch to say our services would be going up by £4.50 a month. However, if we got in touch by the end of August, we were able to exit the contract with no penalties.
After getting through to the first line of customer support I was offered a £2.50 discount for the first 6 months. Not happy with that I went through to another customer support advisor after confirming I still wanted to cancel my contract. With this lady, I was able to get a new deal that was better per month than we were currently paying but cheaper than our current rate.
I didn’t stand my ground to be rude or because I thought I was right, I simply believed that we were able to get a better deal. After all, you don’t ask, you don’t get.I believe it is always worth the effort to haggle for the best deal.
The funny thing is until recently I really struggled with saying no to people regarding my blog. Far too many times I have taken on work that wasn’t worth the reward (financially or for the product). Not because I really needed the item or money, simply because I didn’t want to say no.
I was scared that if I said no, that would put a stop to any future collaborations too. It has only been recently that I have started to focus more on what works best for me on the blog and how to ensure I get that.
