With the current situation, many of us have found ourselves working from home. As a parent, it’s not always easy – especially if you’re trying to balance homeschooling your kids whilst working from home. Without the need to actually leave the house, our routine has definitely changed a lot in recent weeks. Some of the changes have been positive, such as having a more flexible routine, being able to cook lunch fresh every day, and getting school work out of the way earlier.
However, there have been some negatives, one of which being my skin. Since I’ve been at home, I have noticed that my skin has become dry and tender in lots of areas, something I never really had any issue with. This is down to a number of reasons, most likely (right now) poor diet, dry air and stress. 1) Poor diet
While baking is a fun activity to keep the kids entertained, it has meant our diet has gone a little off-course. I know the homemade cake is the best, but my waistline doesn’t agree! Plus, I can’t remember the last time I drank over 2 litres of water – in fact, I’d be surprised if I’m drinking a pint a day.
It’s important to remember that hydrated skin starts from the inside out. Drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, eating a balanced diet, and introducing foods with high water content, such as watermelon or lettuce, all help keep the skin hydrated. 2) Stress
Between working from home and homeschooling, the last 8 weeks have probably been the most full-on in a long time in my life. Through all of this, I’m finding that trying to balance so much is having an impact on my body.
Stress can definitely take its toll on your skin, in ways that include deepening fine lines and wrinkles. There are a few ways I could look after my body and skin better, such as getting to bed earlier, drinking fewer caffeinated beverages, going on a technology detox, or running myself a relaxing bath.
3) Dry air
During lockdown, I’ve hardly left the house, and being stuck indoors staring at your computer screen is far from the best way to look after yourself. On top of this, staying indoors all day means the dry air inside your home dries out the moisture in your skin faster than usual.
To combat this drying effect, it’s a good idea to stick to a consistent skincare routine that includes moisturising creams and serums. One of the reasons my skin is so dry at the moment is that I’m not following a consistent skincare routine. Keeping a bottle of hydrating mist by your desk can also be a great way to instantly hydrate and refresh the skin throughout the day, whenever it’s feeling dry.
How I’m looking after my skin during the lockdown
As I get used to the “new normal”, I’m planning to look at my choices and try to treat my body and skin a little better in the coming weeks and months.
