Covid has had a massive impact on everyone, however, I feel that kids have taken a blow in so many ways. I’m not sure about you but trying to get kids active and motivated again since lockdown has become a real struggle. They just don’t feel like getting out and about, even though we have a garden and have been for walks. It is almost as though they have become used to being little hermits.
This is just the tip of the iceberg though, home learning has now meant that both Kayleigh and Ethan require glasses. Ethan more so than Kayleigh, but something neither of them was remotely close to needing them prior to the lockdown. I am extremely grateful that we have not been directly affected by covid, I appreciate how lucky we are for this. It is just a little sad how so many children have missed out on things that we may have all taken for granted such as leaving school, transition, once in a lifetime trips and so much more.
If you are looking for ideas to get kids active, here are 5 suggestions that you might not have considered previously.
5 ideas to get kids active
- Horse riding – I have never been horse riding before, however, Daddy Vs Work has and said it is amazing. We know a few people whose children do go horse riding and it looks amazing. Even if you are just looking to do something a little different with your children, why not see what is on in your local area. Just watch out though, I’ve heard the horse riding bug is easy to catch and it won’t be long before they are asking for a stable such as valestables.com in the back garden!
- Snowboarding – Kayleigh and Ethan are booked on a once in a lifetime trip with their school next year where they will be learning to ski, as well as visiting the most amazing places in New York. Before they go though we are looking to get them booked in for some snowboarding or skiing lessons to try and avoid a few injuries! We live fairly close to Xscape in Milton Keynes, so it will be a bit of indoor skiing to get them ready. If you are local, why not check it out, the kids will love it!
- Geocaching – Getting active doesn’t have to cost money and geocaching is the perfect example of this. Why not get the whole family out and head out to do a little geocaching, this post from the National Trust gives you a great rundown on how to get started. It is a great day out for the whole family too, with the warmer weather coming along, you can enjoy the great outdoors again.
- Junior parkrun – Do your children enjoy running? Parkruns are back up and running around the UK and there is the option for juniors to get involved too with the junior parkruns. It can be an early start in the morning to do this, however, that will soon be forgotten about when the fresh air kicks in.
- Go for a kickabout – With the Euro’s about to kick off, we are about to be thrown into football fever. Now it is unlikely England are going to get very far (what!? It’s true let’s be honest) however this doesn’t mean that you can get active. Take advantage of footie fever and head to the park with a ball. You don’t need goals or equipment, just head out for a kickabout with some jumpers for goals like old times. You will find you will work up a sweat without even trying.
Whatever your plans are to get kids active, make sure you get involved. So many times we think about our children and their health but have you look at how active you are? I know since lockdown I have become lazier and less active than I was previously, I have already discussed the fact I am getting healthier with Slimming World. I plan to get involved when the kids get active and get active myself, make it a really fun family time at the same time. Hopefully, this will keep everyone motivated if we are all doing it at the same time!
