Coding is a fun extracurricular that many parents encourage their children to pick up from a young age. It engages the mind actively and comes along with many other benefits. It supports creativity, logical thinking and the ability to think which are all ways to improve a child’s education as well. Many schools around the world are now incorporating coding due to the number of benefits it offers to students. Based on academic results and scientific findings, here is a list of benefits of coding lessons for children.
Logical thinking. This is no easy task and is something that should be introduced and taught to children when they are young. Seeing and determining connections between causes and consequences is something that even adults struggle with and spend years working on. The key is to be able to break situations down into small pieces, which allows us to analyse each sector individually. Through coding, children will gain the ability to realise that even small actions and commands are made up of smaller steps that need to be achieved first.
Creativity is found through coding. It is the perfect task to get children to explore their creativity. Through the process of taking instructions to complete big projects, explorative thinking and brainstorming come into play. With coding allowing children to explore into a world bigger than our own, there is no limit as to what can be created. Design, visual art, music and more have the potential to be taken to bigger levels. This is one of the main reasons that coding is becoming popular amongst youngsters.
Persistence and resilience. Coding is similar to art; it takes time and patience. Coding to some extent requires individuals to face trial and error. If one method does not work, sit back, analyse it and try a new one. This could take minutes or days. The key is to remember that it is unknown and each task is different. However, this teaches children that failure does not mean defeat, instead it means stand up and find another way to achieving the final goal. This is a vital skill for adults to acquire too as it is a necessity when joining the workforce.
Maths and English skills benefit from coding lessons. Coders don’t need to be a whizz at these subjects but it does in fact improve their abilities when it comes to learning in the classroom which is the best benefit of all.
