Updating your wardrobe as a parent always tends to come last to the kids, I don’t know about you but my two have a wardrobe full of variety where as mine tends to be jeans, polo shirts and vest tops, just in a variety of colours.
Summer is usually the time of the year when I do a little refresher, however, the weather this year is a little pants. 2 weeks into the Summer holidays and we have had hardly any sunshine but a lot of rain! The sun is on the way though, if the weatherman is to be believed.
Every now and then though we do need a little refresh and the Summer is perfect as your staple items such as your tops and jeans can be dressed up in warmer weather with jumpers and cardigans. If you are on the lookout for some new items for your wardrobe, here are the current trends.
Top Summer trends for updating your wardrobe :
- Sustainable and eco-friendly fashion: With growing awareness about environmental issues, sustainable fashion is likely to continue gaining popularity in 2023 and beyond. Expect to see more clothing made from recycled materials, organic fabrics, and ethical production practices. I always try to ensure that we are recycling our clothes too when they are past their best to help with the process.
- Vibrant colours and patterns: Summer is often associated with bright and bold colours. Vibrant hues and playful patterns are exploding all over the high street, with pink (thanks to the new Barbie movie) in pretty much every shop. If you are looking for some ideas on themes, think tropical prints, neon shades, and colour blocking.
- Flowy and lightweight fabrics: As temperatures rise, lightweight and breathable fabrics like linen, chiffon, and cotton will be popular choices. Loose, flowy silhouettes and oversized garments are likely to be sticking around. I have never been able to pull off the oversized theme, however, there are some beautiful pieces out there.
- Retro influences: Fashion trends often cycle back, and in 2023 we might see a resurgence of retro styles. This includes baggy jeans, combat trousers and cropped tops! Don’t forget the trends such as flared pants, tie-dye prints, oversized blazers, and vintage-inspired accessories, these are likely to be back on trend soon. It is funny, as a kid, you would look at things in the past and wonder how they were on trend, roll forward a few years and you are the first in line to purchase the re-hash of these designs!
- Statement accessories: Accessories can make or break an outfit, and in 2023, bold statement pieces are expected to be popular. Oversized sunglasses, chunky jewellery, colourful handbags, and distinctive hats may help elevate your summer looks. With accessories, I always find that you can invest properly once and they work with so many trends throughout the seasons.

As well as a new refresh for my home wardrobe, I also need to start looking at the options for my work wardrobe. I have worn suits for the last few years and need to start looking at a refresh on these but the one thing I always tend to struggle with is the tops to go with them as I am not keen on vest tops for work but blouses just do not look right. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them in the comments below, even if it is a shop to take a trip to. Daddy vs Work is also in need of a top-up too however, he plays it safe with polo shirts and trousers.
