Many of us rely on our cars too much, whether it is just to pop to do the shopping, the school run, work run or just ferrying our kids around to the various clubs and activities they have on. Because of all of this, if we end up without a car for a few days, it can seem like a big logistical problem.
If you are in the market for a new family car, maybe just to get a newer model or maybe to upgrade due to an expanding family, here are a few key features for you to consider before making your purchase.
Key features for family cars
Size
This for me is probably the most important feature of the car.
Not only in terms of the space inside the car but also the space in the boot. Anyone with kids and a dog will tell you how many things you need to pack, even just for a day trip. Making sure you have enough room for a safe journey in which we are all comfortable is important. As a tall family, legroom is important to us, especially on those longer runs.
You don’t need to buy a car that is a huge people carrier, there are lots of options such as SUV’s that are perfect for families now.
Safety
Safety is paramount when it comes to motoring, check out the safety features that come with your car. If you are unsure, you can always ask the car dealership their thoughts on the features in the cars you are looking at, as well as your own research.
Economy
Being a parent is expensive enough before you add in the taxi fees of running your car.
If you are looking to change the car, now is a good time to look at the costs of running the car. Just getting a newer model with a lower engine size could help cut the yearly car tax but it could also be more economical with the running costs and save you some cash at the pump. You could even consider switching to an electric car or maybe a hybrid engine to help reduce costs but also help the environment at the same time.
Reliability
The last thing you want to have when you buy a new car is it being unreliable and costing you time, effort and money to get it back on the road.
Unfortunately, sometimes you just get a car that feels like it is more of an effort than it needs to be. Before you make your purchase, make sure you do your research.
This may be in the form of online reviews or even asking family and friends. Everyone will have an opinion on cars and even established brands.
Price
Price is, of course, a key factor and you will need to find one within your budget so always think about how much you have to spend and always include running costs (fuel, insurance, tax etc).
Seller
You should always purchase from a reputable dealership and especially if buying second-hand. I just feel more comfortable dealing with a dealership with something that is so expensive, it is a personal choice but one I have always stuck with.
These are the key factors to consider when shopping for a family vehicle. It will need to be spacious, economical, comfortable, safe and reliable and there are lots of great options for families of all sizes for affordable prices when you shop in the used car market.
