Do your children do chores?

Kayleigh and Ethan are very lucky and I do encourage them daily to be very grateful for the lives they live. Although they tidy up their rooms and put their dirty dishes in the dishwasher, that is about all they really do. Do your children do chores?

Now firstly let me say, I’m not expecting them to be cleaning the house top to bottom whilst I sit on my bum, though I wouldn’t mind a cleaner!

However, now they are 10 & 11 years old, we are looking to start letting them take a little more responsibility around the home. During the summer I have taught them how to use both the dishwasher and washing machine. I very much doubt I will ask them to do the washing however they are helping out with unloading the dishwasher and then reloading it when it is needed. They are also taking on dusting their rooms and making sure they’re cupboards are organised and tided every now and then.

I don’t really know what other parents ask their kids to do if anything! What are your thoughts on children doing chores?

Do your children do chores?

For me, I just want to make sure that both our children understand and appreciate the effort that goes into ensuring they have a safe clean roof over their heads. More than this though, I want them to learn to be self-sufficient ready for when they fly the nest, I want them to realise that when you become an adult it’s not just a case of getting up, going to work, then relaxing. There isn’t a magic cleaning fairy that comes through the home to ensure you have clean clothes and dishes. I mean, food doesn’t just appear in the fridge! Though although there may not be a fairy, there are companies like Cleandy that will come in and make your home sparkle!

If you are looking for your children to help out with chores, here are some easy ones to get started with;

  • Dusting
  • Hoovering
  • Making their beds
  • Washing up
  • Hanging the washing out

The kids are doing enough now to help out, as they get older and no doubt more expensive when it comes to pocket money then we may come back and relook at what they are responsible for. At this minute in time though, whilst they are helping without any arguments, I’ll take the help they are offering! I am interested to hear your thoughts.
