The return to school in September is going to be strange, it always was going to be for us, Kayleigh is now going to be in high school and Ethan in year 6.
However, this year did not end how it should have. Kayleigh like so many missed out on her year 6, in a way that none of us saw coming. Then both children have been out of school since March, homeschooling has been hard, especially whilst I’ve been trying to work full time alongside it. Routines have gone out of the window, getting dressed before 9 am is an achievement and September is going to bring a whole host of its own challenges.
I’m not going to lie, I am nervous come September. Our town is under watch for a potential spike, both Daddy Vs Work and I work in different schools and Kayleigh is going to high school. So between us, we are going to be going off to 4 different schools 5 days a week, the chance of exposure to our household is pretty high. However, we have to continue as normal and try and get used to our new normal, keeping as safe as possible.
It is going to be strange in September, after not being able to walk to school with Kayleigh and Ethan due to work, then getting 2 years to do it, it stops again. Kayleigh will be walking with her friends some of the way to school, this again is causing me anxiety. I know it is a passage of childhood and she will be safe with her friends but it is hard to release that protection a little. She, on the other hand, can not wait for the little bit of freedom she will be getting.
For me, it seems like yesterday that she started reception year in school. How can she be going into high school!?
Personally, I’m not looking forward to trying to get out of the house on time and being in work by 7.45! There are no meetings hiding behind a computer with your PJ bottoms on hiding the fact you were too lazy to get dressed for the 9.30 meeting! I suspect that first week back we will all be sleeping well and looking forward to a lazy weekend ahead. For now, though, we have 4 more weeks of the summer holidays to enjoy without worrying about what September will bring just yet.
