Time to look after myself

As a parent, I always come the bottom of the list. I am last to sit down and eat, last to get anything I need such as clothes etc, last to sit down and rest.

It doesn’t bother me one bit either if I am honest. I would put my little family first over myself every day.

However in the next 5 weeks I am going to have to put myself first.

I need to go in and have a foot operation. It was something I had put off seeing the doctor about as I though oh its just a bunion (eww old persons foot…) however after one exercise class I was unable to walk on it for the whole weekend so I thought it was best to get it looked over.

After a trip to the doctors he agreed it needed to be looked at and as I am fortunate enough to have private health care I was able to see a consultant pretty quickly.

Again though I thought it was a simple procedure, quick fix operation and away I go.

However it’s not turned out like that at all. I need to go in and not only have the bunion dealt with but I actually need to have a mid foot fusion operation. This basically mean’s my foot has to be broken mid way up one of the bones, repositioned and then plated into place.

It’s not a 5 minute operation and recover nor is it just one foot.

I need both done.

However its going to take time, my first operation is in August and honestly it can not come soon enough. My right foot is painful most days now and is painful to wear shoes etc.

The recovery is going to be even longer.

10 weeks on crutches and I think in a cast, with minimal weight-bearing, no driving either.

I’m not sure how I am going to cope with it all either.

I work and live fast, I am always on the go. I’m one of these people who if there is something to do I’d rather get it done than leave it waiting but with this I’m not going to have a choice but to slow down.

However it comes with the issue of simple tasks such as having a shower or a bath. Unfortunately I don’t have a walk in shower but a shower over my bath so  I am going to have to find a way of getting in and out of the bath.

There is also the simple things such as getting a drink or getting myself dressed to begin with that I need to figure out.

I must admit I am a bit nervous of operation and the recovery but I am looking forward to being pain-free once it’s all done!

Hope the operation goes well and you’re back on your feet as soon as possible! Just try to focus on how much better you will feel when you are back to full mobility and that will see you through. x

I broke my ankle badly and had it operated on a few years ago, my shower is over the bath too, and I found it easiest to hire a bath stool from Red Cross so that I could sit down, and cover the cast in cling film to waterproof it! Don’t worry, it’ll be a test of your ingenuity, I quite enjoyed the problem solving aspect (but nothing else of course!)

Good luck with your operations and I wish you a speedy recovery! I was in a leg cast a few years ago after I badly dislocated my knee. I was off my feet for about 8 weeks, and I have to admit it was tough, but the most important thing is to rest. You need time to fully recover. My husband was also in an arm cast at the same time – he had to have surgery on his hand and have pins placed, so it was a bit hectic for a while, but us Mums always find a way! Xoxo

Good luck with your operation, my daughter (who was 16 at the time) had to have a reverse bunion done (it’s was on the outside of her foot by her little toe) and she too had to have it broken and plated. She was mortified when the specialist suggested it as she said ‘that’s what old people get, like my mum!’ – charming! Bathing was an ordeal, luckily she just had a removable special shoe so it was to bad!
